Fairy Houses This Summer (2013)

Inspired by this wonderful book about fairy houses (Barry & Tracy Kane), Maya asked me to join her in the garden – and in turn, we asked Alfie.

20130729-140103.jpg

We spent a lovely morning building fairy houses…

20130729-140852.jpg

20130729-140936.jpg
Alfie’s base was a row of many sticks, upon which was made a bed (with the leaf), a fire with small twigs and stones around (flower petals for ‘fire’), and a shell bowl of food (chives). He just loved doing this – and later made a slide out of sticks for them…

Maya used a big stone as the basis, and tore holes in a leaf for a ladder. She used a flower head as a lamp, a feather as a flag, and small sticks as a fence, with some sticks balancing up a leaf as a shelter…

20130729-141500.jpg

20130729-141816.jpg
…and of course I just had to join in…

Great fun! 🙂

Exploring How A Digger Works In Different Types Of Sand

Teddy has been fascinated with diggers for about a year now. For the most part he’s simply enjoyed watching them at work, and shouting “digger digger” whenever he sees one…. but now he’s starting to play with them too….

20130728-075548.jpg

20130728-075502.jpg
Yesterday we discovered, however, that pushing diggers around in wet sand was much trickier than in dry sand….they just kept getting stuck….and the diggers had to work that little bit harder to shift sand!

20130728-075858.jpg
And the digger’s shovel itself made much more sense as a tool with wet sand…..

20130728-080024.jpg
It wasn’t long before Ted realised that although the diggers needed to work harder in the wet sand, it was much easier to build something, and it wasn’t long before he had collected stones and sticks to make a road…

20130728-080309.jpg

20130728-080348.jpg
This was great fun – especially collecting the sticks!
A very proud boy he was when he finished! 🙂

Birthday Collage

I wanted to make a special card for Leon’s birthday, so we printed out a photo from each year of his life and made him a photo collage around the number 12….

20130726-221632.jpg

He has it on the wall above his bed.

As Maya said,”It’s amazing to think that that little baby has grown in to the person he is now!”
🙂

Turning Twelve

Yesterday our lovely Leon turned twelve. Twelve! It seems like a turning point – not exactly the ‘end of childhood’, but certainly becoming more grown up. Though I think we may have a while left before we reach teenage-hood! 😉
We put out a special place for Leon to sit and open his presents…

20130726-130241.jpg
It was like digging in to a parcel of surprises…

20130726-130342.jpg
His main present from us was his much asked for scooter, and some smaller things like a book, and a 3D puzzle – though I do believe that Mormor and Patu’s archtiecture lego (the white house) was a big hit….

20130726-130648.jpg
(Thanks Mormor and Patu! In fact he’s already halfway finished with building it he loved it so much…!)
Maya made him the letters of his name from white chocolate, and made him the sweetest card…

20130726-131122.jpg
It says “what or who is it that is nice and kind?”, and then he opens up the paper to find out that he is also fun, another opening and he is clever, and so on, until finally, when the whole paper is unfolded it says “why YOU of course!”. 🙂
Alfie made him some lemon muffins, and a rainbow maze…

20130726-131536.jpg
…and even Ted made a little picture…

20130726-135251.jpg

As wished for by Leon, we had a cosy morning at home with the family, and after lunch we all went, with one of his best friends, to the parkour park.

Back at home we invited another friend, and his sister, and shared the cake…

…a lemon flavoured cake with melted white chocolate topping (Leon’s choice!) ….

20130726-135642.jpg
He loved it!
It was really nice to have one of our little friends sing ‘happy birthday’ to him in french…

20130726-135909.jpg
…before we all sang it both in swedish and english too!

20130726-140020.jpg
I wonder what he wished for….?

20130726-140117.jpg

There are not enough words to describe how wonderful you are Leon, and we are thankful for every day we spend with you!

Happy Birthday!

🙂

Skåne : Mandelmann’s Garden

The Mandelmann family live their lives through sustainable living. Their huge garden is open to the public, who can look around, buy some vegetables or jams (grown and made on the premises), or perhaps support them by eating some of their wonderful homemade food from the cafe (everything taken directly from their garden or the small farm).
We thoroughly enjoyed being here…

20130726-064110.jpg

20130726-064210.jpg
Ted found a kid’s wheelbarrow and just loved pushing it around everywhere…

20130726-064923.jpg
The garden was huge – with orchards of fruit, patches of pumpkins, squash and kale to name but merely a few, and huge green houses with tomatoes and courgettes. There were bee hives and ladybird houses, herb gardens, chickens, pigs turning the soil – and lots of little cosy areas to eat food from the cafe – and the food was outstanding!

At this point however, Leon took my camera for a few nature shots. He took quite a lot, so I’ll just include a handful…

Skåne : A Day Trip To Copenhagen

Denmark lies just a couple of hours drive from Skåne, and since the Öresund bridge has been built (the longest one in Europe), it’s even nearer. Well it would be silly not to take a trip there, wouldn’t it really? 😉
The bridge was very impressive. Majestic almost….

20130725-081651.jpg

20130725-081730.jpg
Copenhagen was the nearest city, so seemed the sensible place to visit.

We couldn’t visit Denmark without going in to the lego shop (not in our family anyway!)….

20130725-081934.jpg

20130725-082006.jpg

20130725-082058.jpg
The kids were thrilled to choose their own pot of lego from all the assorted pieces. Like kiddies in a ‘sweet shop’…

20130725-082329.jpg
….the choice is endless….

20130725-082427.jpg
….and often hard to reach…..

20130725-082534.jpg
Copenhagen is a buzzing city – with some amazing street artists….

20130725-082717.jpg
When we’d had our fill of street artists we spotted this….

20130725-083746.jpg
The ‘Guinness Book Of World Records’ museum! Well, as Leon is a big fan of the world records, we had to take a look inside….
…..at the tallest man….

20130725-094826.jpg
….the heaviest man…..

20130725-094917.jpg
….the fastest car….

20130725-095052.jpg
….and the man who has eaten the most metal….

20130725-095153.jpg
Leon tried to beat the record for the fastest drum beat…

20130725-095300.jpg
Nope. Too tricky!
We then took a walk down to the harbour…

20130725-095511.jpg

20130725-095556.jpg

20130725-095637.jpg</a
Busy but beautiful!

And in true Scandinavian style, we found a lovely child centred area right in the middle of the city…

20130725-100215.jpg

20130725-100258.jpg
On the walk back to the car (with an ice cream on the way), we walked past the Hans Christian Anderson shop! Our pockets were empty, and the little ones were very tired…

20130725-100619.jpg
“We’ll have to come back again soon” I told Maya…..
🙂

Skåne : Glimmingehus

A stunning place, and Sweden’s first medieval castle…

20130725-073210.jpg

20130725-073252.jpg
A fascinating place for the kids to visit – the three oldest went in with Richard as Teddy was frightened by the darkness – so I looked around alone afterwards – which was admittedly peaceful…..but therefore no photos of the kids!
😉

Skåne : Stenshuvud (National Park)

Up through the forest lies Skåne’s only mountain. It’s said that there’s a cave in this mountain where a troll lives. One day the troll was going to have a baby – but she needed help when giving birth, so sent for a local lady, who would be given gold in exchange for her kindness. When a local lady came to help the troll give birth, she was given gold as promised, but when the lady came home, all the gold had been turned to hair…
Well, that’s how the myth goes, but we didn’t see any trolls (or even a cave), but we did have an amazing walk, rewarded by an incredible view at the end….

20130725-070929.jpg
As you can see by Alfie’s hair, it was extremely windy when we got to the top, and it was frighteningly high!
The kids, however, found an alcove in the bushes where they happily picked blueberries – and Maya made a blueberry necklace….

20130725-071226.jpg
When we got down from the mountain, we took a short walk to the sea….
