Valentines Fun

It started with a ‘maths’ table ; hearts with numbers on, red sand to write numbers in, beads and pipe cleaners for threading….

Ted started with lining up the numbered hearts….

As yet, Ted doesn’t recognise his numbers very well, but just seeing and playing with numbers will give him a better grasp.

He then proceeded to try writing the numbers in the sand with a pipe cleaner which was great..

And then Alfie came along…to thread beads…

 …and feel the sand…πŸ˜‰…

Then we had some creating….

 …and some cooking….

Lots of fun! ❀️❀️❀️

Roman Numerals

We have a clock with roman numerals in our Croatian cottage…

IMG_7357
So I decided to pass the time with the (extremely) early morning wakers, to teach them a little early morning maths…

IMG_7363
I think they both understood it well! πŸ‘πŸ˜Š
We have since realised that the clock gave us the wrong ‘figure’ for number 4! I was certain it was wrong but distrusted my own knowledge for a commercial clock. They wrote four strikes down instead of one strike and a V….we have since discussed and revised our learning!!! 😳

Shapes In The Sand

Quite simply that…

IMG_7241

IMG_7242
..filling up the rectangle…

IMG_7243
…the bigger square…

IMG_7244

IMG_7245
…the tiny squares…

IMG_7247
…the circle…

IMG_7246
…and the cylinder..

IMG_7248
Simply saying the shape names and describing the shapes is enough. Which shape made the best ‘sand castle’ ? Which was the most difficult? Was the sand too wet or too dry?
Simple, fun, and much appreciated! 😊

Jack And The Beanstalk

Starting with the book…

IMG_6795

IMG_6794
…and a little role play…
..we went on to make a measuring chart for the wall, using the Giant’s footsteps, as well as Jack’s…

IMG_7204

IMG_7205

IMG_7207

IMG_7220

IMG_7233
Ted drew his own version of the giant and the beanstalk…

IMG_7221
(the dot at the bottom is the magic bean..)
..and then we took some beans – and a pebble, to observe and ‘compare’ growth…

IMG_7206
…sprayed some kitchen roll….

IMG_7203
…and popped them in a jar to watch them grow….

IMG_7234
…before reading an alternative version….

One Hundred!

The ‘Nurture Store’ is a fabulous blog to pick up fun ideas from – and the minute I saw ‘create one hundred colours’, I knew it was for Alfie!
He decided, however, not to ‘create’ one hundred colours, but instead to ‘find’ one hundred colours – being a lover of pens means he has a lot to choose from! πŸ˜‰

IMG_7171

IMG_7173

IMG_7188
He was surprised at how few ‘one hundred’ really was, and how easy it was to find one hundred colours.
He then had no problem writing numbers to 100….

IMG_7177
Ted of course also wanted to join in…

IMG_7174

IMG_7178
Following the reading of this book…

IMG_7179

IMG_7180

IMG_7181
..Alfie then decided to make the number 100 from a bead plate…

IMG_7176

IMG_7182
….before putting up a ‘100 show’…

IMG_7175
…with 100 ‘trash packs’. πŸ˜†
Finally came the creation of ‘100’ on Minecraft, using ten blocks of ten in different colours….

A Wet Froggy Sunday!

Yesterday it POURED with rain all day!
So we had a wet froggy Sunday – with froggy (mostly) fingerprint pictures….

IMG_7086

IMG_7088

IMG_7087

IMG_7083
…with the (non-competitive) lily-pad hopping game (hop from one to the other, and freeze when the music stops)….

IMG_7084
..a froggy sensory tray…

IMG_7085
…using black water beads to represent the tadpoles (or eggs)…

IMG_7089
…and of course, the number rhyme ‘5 little speckled frogs’…

The Magic Rectangle!

I taped a rectangle on the living room floor to see what would happen…

IMG_6195
..at first the rectangle became a place to jump in to from the sofa, and a ‘dangerous place’ to not be inside, and then part of a course for small cuddly toys. But then it became the basis for a shop…

IMG_6207

IMG_6208
…which inspired more shops…

IMG_6203

IMG_6204

IMG_6205

IMG_6206
..which led to a lot of buying and selling ‘unwanted’ toys from each other. Quite a nice way to recycle! πŸ˜€πŸ’·

A Valentines Week

It’s been a week of Valentines here, starting with the making and decorating of heart shape cookies in English Club….

2015/02/img_5775.jpg
…with the change of the sensory tray to a Valentines theme…

2015/02/img_5761.jpg
..with various books. This one, a very basic one for Ted, explaining what Valentines day is…

2015/02/img_5763.jpg
..this wonderful story, also for Ted, about a baby who is just loved SO much. Alfie loved this when he was smaller, especially when the baby’s cousin loved him so much he wanted to fight him! πŸ˜‰ It seemed Ted shared this love of the book, and asked me to read it many times! Excellent!

2015/02/img_5762.jpg
This one, for Alfie’s age and older, a humorous story about the facts of love. What is love? How does it feel? Who can love? What can you love? Is love a good or a bad feeling? Brilliant! And yes, there is an english translation!

2015/02/img_5764.jpg
Finally, this book, for Alfie’s age and older. A factual book explaining about the organ ‘the heart’ and how it works. This was detailed, but simple, and a very good first human biology book.

2015/02/img_5765.jpg
Then, of course, we painted hearts…

2015/02/img_5781.jpg
…and decorated them…

2015/02/img_5782.jpg
We played ‘keep the balloon off the ground’ with our lovely heart shaped balloons…

2015/02/img_5789.jpg
…and had a simple Valentine themed math ‘centre’…

2015/02/img_5785.jpg

2015/02/img_5786.jpg
I thought I had bought small decorative hearts (I found these in a garden shop), but it turned out they were made of chocolate – and it didn’t take Alfie long to find out! So now we just have the paper hearts left!
Finally, we had a Valentines waffle breakfast..

2015/02/img_5784.jpg
…and our lovely Maya, arranged the traditional family Valentines dinner, all by herself….

2015/02/img_5790.jpg
…burgers in heart shapes, pink pasta, red ‘love’ sauce, cherry tomatoes, and red peppers in heart shapes…

2015/02/img_5792.jpg
…lets just see those heart shaped peppers again..

2015/02/img_5793.jpg
What a wonderful surprise!
We hope you had a happy Valentines too! ❀️

‘Griffindor Common Room’ from Gingerbread!

We had some gingerbread dough which needed to be used up. Maya really wanted to make ‘Hogwarts’ but we knew there wasn’t enough dough, so she settled for ‘Griffindor Common Room’!
First drawing a simple design…

2015/02/img_5713.jpg
..measuring, cutting, baking, cooking the sugar, and piecing it together…

2015/02/img_5708.jpg

2015/02/img_5707.jpg

2015/02/img_5706.jpg

2015/02/img_5709.jpg
…and thus it was finished! Four walls, a long table, four chairs and a fireplace (with wood)…

2015/02/img_5710.jpg
…and I secretly added characters to make her smile.. πŸ˜‰

2015/02/img_5714.jpg
A fabulous maths lesson to boot! πŸ˜†
