‘Ghosts’ In Water

I observed this the other day, and thought it was pretty magical.

I thought my little ones would think so too!

Take a big container of water….

…and a drop of food coloring…

IMG_3285

…and watch closely…

IMG_3286

Watch how the colour moves around in the water…

IMG_3288

…and moves…

IMG_3289

..and moves…

IMG_3290

…until the colouring is eventually evenly dispersed.

Try with clean water and another colour…

Some colours were less dramatic than others…

…but their density was, eventually, heavier…

IMG_3303

We decided to add yellow on top of black, to see how they would mix…

IMG_3304

The effect was dramatic…!

A cloudy, murky mass, where clearly the density of the yellow colouring was much heavier than the rest.

This was brilliant!

Each strand of colouring could be seen moving as individual ‘strings’ in the water…

…they were described as ‘spidery’, and could even be seen as a slow moving ‘whirlwind’ at one point.

A fun experiment, and easy to prepare!

A Day Of Building

As the middle sized kids were upstairs building cities with lego, Ted and I passed the time building with blocks…

Ted’s an exceedingly active two year old, and if you’re not armed with a huge pile of books, it’s hard to keep him positioned in one place!

So this felt like a breakthrough!

And the proud smile on his face was worth every ….block!

🙂

It seemed that today was going to be a building day, because when the little one was sleeping, we had planned to build igloos with mini marshmallows….

Mummy’s is the one at the back (she used a cardboard disc for the roof), and Alfie’s the one at the front.

Alfie also came up with his own original coloured version…

And Maya, our main resident artist, added animals and ice pools…

IMG_3206

Of course, when you have a huge amount of snow outside, like we do, there’s nothing better than building with the real stuff!

Whether it be a table and chairs, ready for snack time for when the oldest comes home from school…

IMG_3209

…or a real ‘igloo’…

IMG_3214

…with space for not one, but two…!

The Cookie Store

Welcome to our ‘cookie store’…

IMG_2389

IMG_2387

We’ve worked hard…

IMG_2386

…to ‘bake’ chocolate cookies, chocolate chip cookies, ‘ballerina’ cookies (with jam in the middle), ‘pepparkaka’ cookies (gingerbread), ‘Ted’ cookies, ‘Iggle Piggle’ cookies and ‘MarMagi’ cookies …

Come and have a taste!
