I observed this the other day, and thought it was pretty magical.
I thought my little ones would think so too!
Take a big container of water….
…and a drop of food coloring…
…and watch closely…
Watch how the colour moves around in the water…
…and moves…
..and moves…
…until the colouring is eventually evenly dispersed.
Try with clean water and another colour…
Some colours were less dramatic than others…
…but their density was, eventually, heavier…
We decided to add yellow on top of black, to see how they would mix…
The effect was dramatic…!
A cloudy, murky mass, where clearly the density of the yellow colouring was much heavier than the rest.
This was brilliant!
Each strand of colouring could be seen moving as individual ‘strings’ in the water…
…they were described as ‘spidery’, and could even be seen as a slow moving ‘whirlwind’ at one point.
A fun experiment, and easy to prepare!
